I have not seen either but STARZ really wants me to. It seems to be on continually all day and night on all of their channels.

Remember when subway cars looked like this?

Kinja'd!!!

So the city made a big deal out of cleaning them up and making them graffiti proof. Now they’ve realized that they can make money of it.

Don’t get Starz promotions, but I suppose I will now.

The city “won the war on graffiti” the year after I was born so I don’t remember it on active trains, but I’m well aware of it and the irony of what you mentioned.

Rail nerd/graff fan facts : The subway car with the ad up above is an R62A, one of the cars added to the rolling stock from 1984-1987 which gave them enough new cars to pull any graffiti covered ones from the line. So in a way it helped stamp out graffiti on trains, only to get covered in a different kind.

I believe the train you posted is a european one, so here’s a good old R33 with a Dondi whole car in 1980:

That may well be. I just did a Google and found an image that looked . I was born in 1966, and while I never lived in NYC, I did visit a few times, and those graffiti-covered  cars were certainly part of American culture. Although it looks like some of the new cars are shown in this opening to Welcome Back Kotter, which ran from 1975-1979.

The NYC subway is such a crazy mix of old and new trains. They had R10 cars from 1948 and 1949 running all the way up to 1989 along with much newer cars. They still have some R32 cars running today that debuted in 1964 (finally supposed to retire next year) . Those cars that are still around today certainly lived through the graffiti period, but as far as I can tell most of the graffiti happened on the non stainless steel R10s-R33s that later became known as the “redbirds” after they were painted. The last of the redbirds ran as recently as 2003, although they hadn’t been run with graffiti on them since 1989.

BTW I love your daily plane history posts

Thanks for letting me know! I appreciate that. With the disappearance of stars, it’s hard to know just how many people are enjoying them. I don’t get many replies, so I’m hoping that people are reading but just not commenting.

Gave up STARZ when we cut the cable ... no need to get it again, as far as I know.

I think I am at a breaking point, what with all the Brit detective shows I watch. Gave up on Walking Dead because NINE FUCKING SEASONS?
